About Margaret Lachut

Who knew, at age 5, that your mother would find your first sketches of male nudes hidden under the mattress when the sheets were changed?  Not “Maggie”, that’s for sure!  From that day on, though her focus has shifted to “plein air” scenes, she has spent a lifetime admiring, appreciating, and interpreting the abundantly colorful world that surrounds her.

Margaret was born in Jourdanton, a very small town outside of San Antonio, Texas.  She moved to New England when she married Frank Lachut from Rhode Island.  She began to professionally nourish her creative appetite as a fashion illustrator for two well-known local businesses, the Outlet Company and Ann and Hope.  With the happy arrival of her two children Michelle and John, Margaret put her artistic career endeavors on hold.

Margaret’s formal education in art was jump-started when she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas.  When her children went to school, Maggie followed their example.  She attended Rhode Island College and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Art Education. She also successfully completed a second Master’s Degree in Studio Painting.  Always seeking to expand her artistic horizons, she enthusiastically participated in workshops with well known artists such as Charles Movalli, Janet Walsh, and Wolf Kahn.

Her schedule is a full one that includes teaching Art in the Cumberland Public School System and giving private art lessons to children and adults.  She has traveled extensively, both in this country and in Europe, studying the works of the Masters.  This has contributed to the development of her unique, contemporary, impressionistic style.  Her most recent works encompass “plein air” scenes of the New England area.

She is an artist member of the Wickford Art Association, Franklin Art Society, Foxoboro Art Association and the Rhode Island Water Color Society.  Exhibitions of her work have been displayed in various juried show and competitions, where they won several prestigious awards.

Anyone who views a wide variety of her work, will feel her emotional investment, see a vivid combination of color, and marvel at her ability to design an active surface on her canvas or paper.  For Margaret, the raison d’etre of her work is to strive for vibrancy and create a sense of theater with her color harmony.
